Judith Finell is a musicologist-expert witness in copyright infringement matters. She works with attorneys, composers, advertising agencies, and various firms engaged in entertainment, recording, publishing, and software.

Ms. Finell is often asked for an opinion as to the similarities and differences between two musical compositions. In other cases, she researches the copyright status of particular pieces of music and advises on musical selections for film scores. In addition, attorneys work with her in preparing cases for trial and researching prior art.

Developing areas such as digital sampling, music used on the Internet, and other contemporary trends are currently being addressed. When a software company is developing music education materials, Judith Finell consults on the choice of music from a copyright and stylistic standpoint. She also advises on program development, needs of musicians, and musical game materials.

Ms. Finell appears as a guest speaker at law schools and conferences regarding music, copyright and the law, and has given seminars to copyright law departments, advertising and entertainment firms, in order to heighten awareness of copyright issues and to prevent litigation whenever possible. She has been a trustee of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., and has guest lectured at Fordham and NYU law schools in New York, as well as in Detroit, Chicago, and throughout the U.S. She is also on the Internet Music Committee, dealing with copyright issues in the electronic age, under the auspices of the Copyright Society of the USA and Recording Industry Assn. of America.
